Calliope hiding in basement bathroom- "Fossilized marble concealed me even better than my hair. In the basement bathroom was a time frame I felt much more comfortable with, not the rat race of the school upstairs but the slow, evolutionary progress of the earth, of its planet and animal life forming out of the generative, primeval mud" (328).
"And then Milton lifted his chin and said it: 'To hell with the Greeks.' In 1974, instead of reclaiming his roots by visiting Bursa, my father renounced them. Forced to choose between his native land and his ancestral one, he didn't hesitate" (163). I think this is an important quotation because it shows the full americanization. Milton does not acknowledge or appreciate his family's roots. He has completely given up his roots and stand up for America. He disappoints his family and his friends when he makes this statement. He offends his friend who comes from Greek heritage. Even though Milton's family has a strong Greek family history, he ignores it in order to fully be an American.
5. I was really surprised by Calliope's and Object's relationship. They are just friends at first but this changes. I am not surprised with Calliope's feelings toward her best friend because she is experiencing a change, but I was surprised that Object went along with Calliope's actions. I thought she would immediately be disgusted and freak out at Calliope, but instead she goes along with the "affair". This affair develops in the dark and soon they are outside in the light. When they are caught, Object does not know how to react and is embarrassed and starts crying. I was just really surprised and little weirded out that Object was so excepting to this affair. I would think that having a best friend try to make a move on you would only ruin your friendship or make things awkward.
3. Another thing that surprised / confused me- When they are in the old hunting lodge and Calliope and Jerome have sex, Calliope realizes what is wrong with her. How does Jerome not realize that she is not a girl?? I also found this part of the chapter to be very weird to read and very bizarre.
Surprised / confused- Having two of her schoolmates pass away- I don't understand why Maxine Grossinger passed away during the play- whats the significance or point? Was it just to show that Calliope was happy that Object was in her arms? Also, when talking about Rex- how he killed the junior girl, only point so Calliope can tell Object that he is a bad guy?
